What does GOTS actually mean?
The Global Organic Textile Standard is the strictest certification in fashion. Here's what it covers — and what it doesn't.
GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard — is the most rigorous certification in textiles. It covers the entire chain, from farm to finished garment: organic fibre sourcing, low-impact processing, wastewater treatment, and minimum labor standards. A garment labeled 'GOTS organic' must contain at least 95% certified organic fibres. Lower-tier 'made with organic' covers 70%+. What GOTS doesn't cover: carbon footprint, end-of-life recycling, or fair wages beyond ILO minimums. Treat GOTS as a strong floor, not a ceiling.
